About The Position

About Us: The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Valley Children’s Hospital is Central California’s only Regional Level IV NICU - the highest level of medical care available for premature and critically ill newborns. With a focus on family-centered care, our patients have access to a full range of pediatric and surgical specialists that treat potentially life-threatening illnesses due to extreme prematurity, congenital defects, injury, chronic illnesses and more. Our NICU patient ratios are 1:1 or 2:1 in the ICU and 1:3 in Intermediate Care. Collectively, our NICUs provide specialized care for more than 1,400 fragile babies and nearly 25,000 patient days a year. Our team supports a network of NICUs throughout Central California, providing services for Madera County, Merced County, Fresno County, Kings County and Tulare County. Our level II and level III satellite NICUs (Fresno, Merced & Hanford) are staffed with Valley Children’s team of experts to provide patients the opportunity to receive treatment closer to home. The nurses in these satellite units are trained to attend high-risk deliveries and resuscitate babies in the delivery room if needed. Our NICU is ranked as one of the best children’s hospitals in Neonatology by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-2024- the seventh such ranking for our NICU. Our expert team consists of more than 250 neonatal nurses, constantly striving to innovate and improve patient care so babies have the best outcomes. Job Summary: Performs nursing activities that have been documented as learned in the nursing program; may assist with medication administration upon completion of the pediatric theory and clinical course work, and successful completion of the Valley Children's medication examination.

Requirements

  • Please Note: Must be continuously enrolled, throughout the duration of employment, in an approved Work Study course at an affiliated institution (Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, West Hills College, College of the Sequoias, SJVC, Merced College, or CSU Stanislaus).
  • Must be able to complete the full, weeklong new hire/clinical orientation.
  • Orientations are typically offered for Pediatric Nurse Externs during school breaks in June, July and August
  • High School Diploma/G.E.D. (required)
  • Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters/or equivalent in an accredited RN Program (required)
  • BLS - Basic Life Support - AHA - American Heart Association within 30 days of hire or transfer into position (required)
  • Advancement to PNE II is based on completion of the pediatric theory and clinical course work.
  • Successful completion of the Children's Hospital medication examination.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
