About The Position

Gillette Children's is seeking a Pediatric Neurohospitalist in St. Paul, MN. Each physician employed by Gillette Children’s is expected to carry out our mission and vision by centering the focus of care on the patient and family. The position is open to full or part time. Gillette Children's is a 60 bed hospital, including 12 EEG/VEEG wired beds, and is part of a Level I Trauma Center. Hospital units include Neurosciences, Pediatric Rehabilitation, and PICU, with other specialties like Neurosurgery, Intensivists, and Pediatric Hospitalists. Each neurologist provides direct patient care through a combination of services, based on patient needs and the training and skills of the neurologist. Requirements

  • Meets the qualifications to practice medicine in the State of Minnesota, including DEA license
  • Current certification in CPR (BLS for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association) or must obtain certification within 90 days of hire
  • Board certified/eligible in pediatric neurology
  • Board-eligible hires will be expected to become board-certified within two years of hire
  • Clinical proficiency in area of pediatric neurology specialty
  • Demonstrated expertise in the management of patients with complex chronic conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to build the trust and respect of patients, staff, colleagues, and external contacts

Responsibilities

  • Attending on the inpatient neurology service
  • 24/7 call with responsibility for answering calls from Gillette providers and outside facilities regarding established Gillette neurology patients and new neurology consults
  • Provide appropriately timely consultations and patient care
  • Coordinate care with hospitalist service and critical care service for those patients with significant neurological issues
  • Daily communication on these patients with hospitalist and critical care services
  • Provide neurology consultation to patients admitted at Gillette
  • Assist in arranging admission of patients if needed
  • Evaluate and manage any established Gillette patients requiring emergency outpatient care, or arrange for a colleague to do so
  • Collaborate with neurology advanced practice providers (APPs)
  • Collaborate and communicate with other services regarding patient care
  • Cover calls for patients of colleagues who are away
  • Interpret VEEGs and EEGs of hospitalized consult patients as privileges apply
  • Admit patients for ketogenic diet initiation
  • Appropriately document all services rendered
  • Supervise any trainees/residents assigned to the rotation
  • Attending on the VEEG service
  • Provide direct admission services and inpatient care for patients scheduled for VEEG
  • Collaborate with the neurology APPs in providing care for these patients
  • Provide patient care for those hospitalized on this service
  • Interpret all VEEGs of scheduled inpatients on a daily basis
  • Interpret outpatient EEG studies; the expectation is these will be interpreted and documented within 24-48 hours
  • Document this work, and generate reports of EEG and VEEG interpretation
  • Management of Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) devices
  • Optional- Provide Lumbar Puncture (LP) services
  • Engage in ongoing training
  • Complete required training annually
  • Participate in continuing education and learning opportunities as appropriate
  • Contribute to education programs
  • Participate in graduate and post-graduate education programs
  • Assist in instructing pediatric residents on their neurology elective from the University of Minnesota
  • Train and supervise child neurology residents from the University of Minnesota
  • When applicable, participate in the training of University of Minnesota Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellows on rotation
  • Other lectures, conferences, mentoring and evaluations
  • Participate in the education of Gillette personnel by participating in functions (e.g., Grand Rounds) when possible
  • Support research and outcome assessment
  • Participate in research opportunities as interests and time constraints allow
  • Support data collection needs related to research and outcomes assessment
  • Support the translation of research and outcome measurement into practice
  • Share research and outcomes assessment findings through publications, conference presentations, etc.
