About The Position

The Division of Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplantation at Children’s Mercy Kansas City is seeking a full-time BE/BC Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist to join our Oncology Team with a focus in the care of children and adolescents with hematologic malignancies. The Children’s Mercy Kansas City Cancer Center cares for approximately 200 newly diagnosed patients with cancer per year. The oncology team is made up of 9 physicians, 7 advanced practice nurses and 2 nurse coordinators. Children’s Mercy is an active member of the Children’s Oncology Group. Through our Experimental Therapeutics in Pediatric Cancer Program, we participate in a number of other clinical trial consortiums that provide access to phase 1 and 2 trials for our oncology patients. Children’s Mercy is aligned with the University of Kansas Cancer Center as a Consortium member institution in its NCI Cancer Center designation. The candidate will participate in clinical, research, and educational efforts and should have an interest in mentoring residents and/or H/O fellows. The division includes multiple sub-specialty services, including the Program for Pediatric Clinical Oncology Services and Research for Hispanics/Latinos. This program’s mission is to revolutionize outcomes for Hispanic children with cancer through bilingual clinical services, personalized genomics-informed medicine, and bench-to-bedside translational research and international collaboration . The Division is made up of 29 total physicians who focus in one of 4 areas – Oncology, Hematology, Bone Marrow Transplantation, or Inpatient Hem/Onc Hospitalist care. Outpatient clinic facilities include 14 infusion bays, and 18 exam rooms wholly dedicated to Hem/Onc. The inpatient unit has 38 fully hepa-filtered private patient rooms where all Hem/Onc patients are admitted. Inpatients are overseen by 4 Hem/Onc services – an inpatient resident/fellow H/O team, a chemotherapy team, BMT team, and an inpatient coagulation consultation team – all staffed by residents and/or advanced practice professionals. The Children’s Mercy Cancer Center is composed of physicians and scientists from multiple medical and surgical specialties and includes patient-specific programs including Survivorship, Hispanic, AYA, and Cancer Predisposition programs. Clinical and laboratory research programs are available both at CMKC and the KUCC campuses as well as our 3 rd Consortium partner institution – Stowers Medical Research Institute – a basic science research institution. The Children’s Mercy Research Institute is a new 9 story research building that includes wet and dry labs along with a GMP facility and vivarium. Further support of cancer research at Children’s Mercy includes our Cancer Genomics program, our Tumor Biorepository, and the Children’s Mercy Division of Clinical Pharmacology with active research in cancer pharmacogenomics. Research is actively supported by a variety of sources including NIH, Foundations, Philanthropic, and Institutional grant mechanisms strongly enhanced by our Research Administration. The person who accepts this position will exhibit excellent clinical skills and a desire to advance the field of hematologic malignancies through research and collaboration. Preference will be given to a Spanish-speaking physician with strong/proven interest in health care disparities and patient advocacy. International medical graduates who have trained or practiced medicine in Latin America will be considered provided residency/fellowship has been completed in the US. He/she will be involved in all aspects of the Cancer Center including clinical, research, and administration, and will possess strong leadership/team skills.
