About The Position

The Pediatric Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling services to pediatric patients and their families, assisting them in understanding genetic conditions, inheritance patterns, and available testing options. They work closely with healthcare teams to facilitate informed decision-making, provide emotional support, and coordinate genetic testing and follow-up care for pediatric patients.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years related experience and/or training.
  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program.
  • Certification or board eligibility as a Genetic Counselor through the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG).
  • Completion of a master's degree program in Genetic Counseling, including coursework and clinical training in pediatric genetics.
  • Continuing education to maintain licensure and certification, including participation in conferences, workshops, and online courses.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to privacy regulations in all aspects of practice.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in pediatric genetic counseling preferred.
  • Experience working in a pediatric healthcare setting highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct genetic counseling sessions, assess risk factors, and provide support to pediatric patients and families.
  • Convey complex genetic information clearly and sensitively.
  • Empathize with patients and families, providing emotional support and guidance throughout the genetic counseling process.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity and the ability to adapt counseling approaches to meet the needs of diverse populations.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams, including physicians, geneticists, nurses, and social workers, to coordinate care and support for pediatric patients with genetic conditions.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhering to privacy regulations in all aspects of practice.
  • Utilize electronic medical records, genetic databases, and telemedicine platforms to support genetic counseling services.
  • Advocate for patients and families, ensuring access to genetic testing, supportive services, and resources to enhance their well-being and quality of life.
