About The Position

This one-year, ACGME accredited Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology fellowship at Children’s National Medical Center is to obtain a level of knowledge and clinical experience which will enable the graduate to become an expert in the field and provide anesthetic care for patients of all ages with congenital heart disease. It is expected that the fellow obtain proficiency in all six ACGME core competencies as it relates to the pediatric cardiac anesthesiology program. The fellowship experience will consist of twelve one month rotations at Children’s National Hospital. The yearlong experience will allow the fellow to gain experience in all arenas where patients with congenital heart disease receive anesthesia, including the cardiac operating rooms, the cardiac catheterization lab, and the cardiac MRI. In addition, the program will provide rotations in Perfusion, Pediatric Echocardiography, and Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care. As the fellow progresses through the program, he/she will gradually take on greater responsibility and independence. At the successful conclusion of the program, the fellow will be qualified to practice independently, and be poised to become a leader in the field of Congenital Cardiac Anesthesiology. Academic time will also be provided for research and scholarly endeavors.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a one-year ACGME-approved pediatric anesthesiology fellowship or equivalent training
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation, including one from the chairman or program director of the training department
  • Completion of medical school in the U.S. or ECFMG certification for international medical graduates
  • Ability to obtain a District of Columbia unrestricted medical license prior to starting fellowship training
  • Successful completion of all three steps of the USMLE

Responsibilities

  • Provide anesthetic care for patients with congenital heart disease
  • Gain experience in cardiac operating rooms, cardiac catheterization lab, and cardiac MRI
  • Participate in rotations in Perfusion, Pediatric Echocardiography, and Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care
  • Progressively take on greater responsibility and independence throughout the fellowship
  • Engage in research and scholarly activities
