About The Position

Shriners Children’s is looking for a Pediatric Burn Surgeon to join our team at Shriners Children’s Northern California. This board eligible/certified general surgeon will be involved in all aspects of burn care at Shriners Children’s Northern California’s Burn Department and the University of California Davis Medical Center Burn Division (part of the Department of Surgery). It is expected that the candidate will participate in all aspects of an academic career, including clinical duties, education, and research. This is a full-time, exempt position with a 1.0 FTE commitment. Schedule is Monday through Friday with call every fourth night and fourth weekend. Compensation ranges between $383,329 and $713,412 and is determined by FTE, years of experience and departmental equity.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
  • Completion of an ACGME accredited residency in General or Plastic Surgery
  • Completion of fellowship training in burn surgery and/or pediatric surgery
  • Minimum 1-3 years of post-fellowship or equivalent clinical experience in burn or pediatric surgery preferred; recent fellowship graduates will be considered based on training and clinical exposure
  • Board certification or eligibility in general surgery, plastic surgery, or pediatric surgery by an appropriate certifying board (e.g. American Board of Surgery or American Board of Plastic Surgery)
  • Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice
  • Must possess eligibility for active DEA
  • Advanced knowledge of pediatric burn pathophysiology, wound healing, surgical reconstruction, and critical care principles.
  • Proficiency in acute surgical interventions and reconstructive techniques for pediatric burn injuries.
  • Familiarity with burn center operational standards, such as those established by the American Burn Association (ABA).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging pediatric patients and their families.
  • Ability to function effectively within interdisciplinary teams and high-acuity environments.
  • Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and trauma-informed care principles.
  • Proficient in the use of electronic medical records and clinical documentation practices.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial assessment, triage, and stabilization of pediatric burn patients in accordance with established burn care protocols.
  • Perform surgical procedures related to burn care, including but not limited to escharotomies, excision and grafting, reconstructive surgeries, and contracture releases.
  • Oversee fluid resuscitation, wound management, pain control, nutritional support, and critical care for burn-injured patients.
  • Participate in the longitudinal care of patients, including outpatient follow-up, scar management, and rehabilitation planning.
  • Coordinate care with pediatric intensivists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, and social workers in a comprehensive burn care team.
  • Provide consultation services within the hospital system and support referral networks for pediatric burn management.
  • Maintain detailed and timely documentation in the electronic health record, adhering to regulatory, institutional, and professional standards.
  • Participate in burn unit quality assurance, clinical performance improvement, and compliance with burn center verification standards.
  • May engage in education, research, or administrative leadership activities depending on institutional role and scope.
  • Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards
  • Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.
