About The Position

The Pediatric Anesthesiologist will be responsible for care of pediatric patients with priority to 0-4 years or older based on comorbidities, resident training, daily administrative duties, and conducting quality assurance projects per the needs of the Anesthesiology Service. The scope of these activities cover hospitalized patients and all phases of ambulatory care. The majority of the Anesthesiologist's time will be devoted to patient care. Administrative duties and quality assurance activities will be offered based on the needs of the department.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Doctorate Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university
  • Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
  • Successfully completed Anesthesiology Residency training and successfully completed Pediatric Fellowship training OR combined Anesthesia and Pediatric Residency
  • Board certified or Board eligible in Anesthesiology and Pediatric Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
  • Active Illinois Controlled Substance License or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
  • Active Drug Enforcement Agency License or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
  • Commensurate Pediatric Anesthesia clinical experience (documented) during the previous 24 months
  • Active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Active Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of experience in an academic program

Responsibilities

  • Provides anesthetic care throughout the hospital while meeting and exceeding compliance standards
  • Provides complete range of anesthetic care to all pediatric and adult patients (when needed), including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post anesthesia care in compliance with the national Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations standards
  • Works independently, participates in the training of residents, and provides medical direction to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist’s (CRNA)
  • Provides anesthesia related care in all functional areas of the Operating Room, Obstetrics, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit Ward and clinical settings
  • Examines patients, obtains medical history, and uses diagnostic test to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures
  • Coordinates work during medical procedures with nurses, residents, CRNA’s, medical technicians, and health care providers
  • Administers anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures using local, regional, general, and Monitor Anesthesia Care (MAC) methods
  • Coordinates the administration of anesthetics with surgeons during procedures in the operation room
  • Provides and maintains life support and airway management as needed, and helps prepare patients for emergency surgery
  • Determines when patients have recovered, or stabilized enough, to be transferred to Intensive Care Unit, or discharged home following surgery
  • Works daily hours, takes 1st call (in-house), 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th calls or other calls based on Operating Room (OR) needs including Pediatric calls
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
