The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is one of the largest organizations dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City. The DHS collaborates with various public agencies and not-for-profit partners to prevent homelessness before it occurs, reduce street homelessness, and assist New Yorkers in transitioning from shelters to appropriate permanent housing. The New York City Department of Homeless Services Police is responsible for protecting designated city-managed shelters. Special Officers play a crucial role in safeguarding the city's most vulnerable populations, continuing a tradition that has been in place for over 25 years. Special Officers perform a range of difficult and responsible tasks directly related to physical security, safety, loss prevention, and maintenance of order. Their duties include patrolling designated areas of public buildings and surrounding locations to maintain order, preserve peace, and protect life and property against threats such as fire, vandalism, and theft. The role requires a proactive approach to security, including discouraging and ejecting loiterers and disorderly individuals, arresting law violators, and preparing necessary documentation related to arrests. In addition to maintaining security, Special Officers are also responsible for assisting individuals in need, including the sick, injured, and disabled, and ensuring that appropriate medical attention is called when necessary. They must maintain accurate records of individuals entering and leaving buildings, operate vehicles to control traffic, and monitor security systems for unusual events. The position requires physical activity in various environmental conditions, including outdoor work in all weather, and may involve engaging in physical confrontations to subdue suspects. Special Officers must also complete ongoing training as mandated by state and agency requirements, and they are expected to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
