About The Position

The Woods Mullen Patient Benefits Coordinator at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) plays a crucial role in supporting the enrollment of patients into health care benefit programs, providing case management, and assisting women in identifying their individual goals and accessing care. This position is part of a high-functioning, interdisciplinary team dedicated to improving health equity for women experiencing homelessness. The role involves patient-facing responsibilities, including greeting and registering patients, enrolling them in health insurance programs, scheduling appointments, and facilitating communication between patients and healthcare providers. The coordinator will also manage clerical duties at the front desk and support outreach efforts to engage marginalized patients in health care settings.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in a medical setting and with insurance/benefits enrollment preferred.
  • Proficient reading and writing skills in English.
  • Computer skills preferred, including MS Office and the ability to operate basic office equipment.
  • Interest in working with people experiencing homelessness and with histories of trauma, SUD, and mental illness.
  • Experience with clinical case management preferred.
  • Bilingual applicants in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Portuguese are encouraged to apply.
  • Sensitivity to ethnic, cultural, and gender beliefs and behaviors.
  • Life support training certification (e.g. CPR, BLS, ACLS) required within 60 days of start date if not already certified.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and register all patients while preserving confidentiality and dignity.
  • Enroll patients in health insurance and benefits programs, navigating transitions as needed.
  • Schedule primary and specialty clinic appointments and support patients in attending these appointments.
  • Facilitate medical record requests from outside healthcare providers.
  • Multitask and prioritize clinical duties in a busy clinic environment.
  • Support quality and equity goals of the clinic team.
  • Manage clerical duties at the front desk, including communication with IT and handling phone calls and faxes.
  • Assist patients in navigating healthcare and social service systems, serving as a liaison between different treatment systems.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to determine priorities and communicate effectively with the clinic team.
  • Collect and record information into databases, manage appointment schedules, and maintain medical inventory logs.
  • Provide outreach and support for specialty clinics and health fairs.
  • Engage marginalized patients to reduce health inequities and promote a trauma-informed care environment.
