About The Position

The Patient Care Tech III (PCT III) at UMass Memorial Health provides patient care to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients under the direction of licensed clinicians. This role is integral to the patient care team, serving both internal and external customers, including patients, nurses, physicians, and other colleagues. PCT IIIs bring additional skills to the table, performing unit secretary duties, telemetry monitoring, and working in specialized areas such as the Step-Down Unit, Emergency Department, Dialysis, and ICU. Responsibilities include clear communication with RNs, constant observation of high-risk patients, assisting with daily living activities, and maintaining patient safety. The position requires a high school education or GED, current Basic Life Support certification, and prior clinical care experience.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school education or GED.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Demonstrated competency attainment in the PCT II level.
  • Prior inpatient/outpatient care experience or clinical care training.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English clearly.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Computer skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients.
  • Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment.
  • Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulating, meals, and nourishment.
  • Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques.
  • Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks and utilizing fall prevention strategies.
  • Takes and records vital signs and measures patients’ height and weight.
  • Performs EKGs, Point of Care tests, and bladder scanning according to hospital standards.
  • Collects, labels, and prepares specimens for transport to the lab.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs.
  • Performs other selected unit specific procedures.
  • Assists RN/Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures.
  • Observes, measures, and records oral food and fluid intake.
  • Answers telephone using appropriate etiquette and relays messages.
  • Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment.
  • Keeps current with hospital and unit changes.
