About The Position

The Patient Care Tech (ED Tech) functions primarily in direct patient care and demonstrates competent clinical practice with a variety of patients. The tech in the ED works as part of a team with a common goal of offering patient centered, timely care, in a safe and friendly environment. The tech in this position offers individualized compassionate care to emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatients based on the direction of the physician and RN. The tech pleasantly provides nonjudgmental care for the acutely ill, as well as the non acute patient. This position requires the ability to perform multiple ancillary roles including, but not limited to, performing duties and procedures within the scope of their practice as assigned, specimen collection, vital signs, EKGs, stocking of supplies, cleaning, and transportation of patients, clerical responsibilities, lab collection, respiratory treatments, and other duties as assigned. This position requires assisting the nurse, physician, and other members of the team to provide relationship-based patient centered care. The tech in this role works with multiple types of sophisticated equipment and handles various types of patients in a friendly and frequently stressful environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Current Emergency Medical Technician licensed with the State of Michigan.
  • Registered Nurses Aide Certification or proof of status as a student in a school of nursing.
  • Organizational skills needed to prioritize workload.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of current nurse aide experience may waive the registered nurses aide requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a friendly customer-oriented attitude at all times as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Follows direction from RN to provide services as prescribed by the physicians authorized plan of care.
  • Provides direct patient care including minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as assigned.
  • Reports effectiveness of treatment plan to the RN and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan.
  • Demonstrates awareness of specific safety concerns in department and complies with MyMichigan Health safety guidelines.
  • Attends education days and seeks opportunities for self-education and enrichment.
  • Collects vital signs and weight, participates in direct patient care, and performs EKG.
  • Assists with emergency equipment and procedures under the direct supervision of the RN or ED physician.
  • Completes documentation as required and follows sterile technique during set up and throughout procedure.
  • Assists RN to ensure patient care outcomes and safety needs are met.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities in the department.
  • Performs according to procedure in all medical center emergency situations.
  • Assists with ordering and stocking of medical supplies.
