About The Position

Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed twelve (12) months in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), in support of the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) Oahu Branch, located in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State law. MONTHLY SALARY: $5,000/Mon.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Wildlife Management, Natural Resources Management, or in a related biological science field.
• One to three (1-3) years of experience in wildlife biology, management, and conservation biology, including project management experience.
• General knowledge of principles and practices of wildlife management.
• Techniques used in making field investigations into the life history, habitats and natural requirements of wildlife.
• Field research methods pertaining to the study of wildlife.
• Identification and knowledge of natural history of Hawaiian bird, mammal and plant species.
• Techniques of trapping, banding and releasing birds, and animal census taking.
• General knowledge of Hawaiian ecosystems and threats from alien species.
• Competence in design, implementation, and analysis of ecological research.
• Ability to speak and write clearly; analyze and clearly explain data, plans, and policies.
• Ability to collect data on wildlife and habitat conditions; conduct bird and mammal surveys; prepare clear and concise reports.
• Ability to handle large wild animals and birds; and work in remote areas.
• Ability to use altimeter, compass, maps and GPS.
• Ability to hike in steep, remote and mountainous terrain.
• Ability to safely operate, use, and maintain various hand tools and simple power tools.
• Ability to operate and maintain outboard motorboat and nonmotorized watercraft in open-ocean and near-shore environment.
• Proficient with software for word processing, spreadsheets, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and statistical analysis.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain throughout the duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

• Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Botany, Zoology, Conservation Biology or other relevant biological science.
• Experience with handling wildlife, familiarity with local, state, and national policy concerning natural resources.
• Experience composing funding proposals.
• Knowledge of Hawaiian waterbird management and monitoring techniques.
• Knowledge of Federal, State, and local environmental laws.
• Familiarity with the State's wildlife management areas.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the design and implementation of the Branch's research development, maintenance, and management programs.
• Provides support to the District Wildlife Biologist for the State Managed Wildlife Areas.
• Plans and organizes field operations related to habitat management activities to restore wetlands, riparian, and other related areas.
• Coordinates and participates in field research censuses and surveys of wildlife and their habitats.
• Performs the full range of wildlife research, development, and management activities.
• Directs the work of technicians and non-professional wildlife workers.
• Handles assignments that may address diverse, complex technical problems.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates methods and approaches for problem solving.
