Job Description: Position Overview We are seeking a highly motivated PCB Layout Automation Intern to support automation and tool development efforts within our networking hardware engineering team. This role is ideal for a student interested in combining hardware design with programming. The intern will gain hands-on experience developing automation tools using Cadence Allegro PCB Designer and the SKILL, while supporting high-speed PCB layout projects for networking platforms such as switches and routers. You will work closely with senior PCB engineers to improve workflow efficiency, create reusable tools, and help standardize layout processes.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • Coursework in programming (data structures, scripting, or software fundamentals)
  • Strong interest in combining software development with hardware design
  • Analytical mindset and problem-solving ability
  • Exposure to SKILL
  • Familiarity with Cadence Allegro PCB Designer
  • Experience with Python, Tcl, or other scripting languages
  • Participation in robotics, FPGA, PCB, or hardware-related student projects
  • Interest in high-speed networking systems

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and testing SKILL-based automation utilities
  • Modify and enhance existing SKILL scripts for: Differential pair validation, Length matching reports, Constraint audits, Design rule automation
  • Create simple custom Allegro forms (GUI elements) using SKILL
  • Develop reporting tools for layout metrics and quality checks
  • Document scripting workflows and best practices
  • Support integration of Allegro automation with external scripts (Python or batch tools)
  • Assist with basic routing and placement tasks
  • Run design rule checks (DRC) and analyze results
  • Support engineering change orders (ECOs)
  • Observe high-speed routing methodologies for Ethernet, PCIe, and DDR interfaces
  • Gain exposure to stack-up design and impedance control principles
