Department Summary: The Mechanical & Reliability Systems and Prototype Development Department provides innovative solutions for electronic prototypes designed for advanced sensing, communication, and navigation systems on ground, airborne, and shipboard platforms. Staff from this group are critical to all aspects of prototype or system development, including conceptual design, system integration, fabrication, testing, and environmental qualification. We provide technical guidance through rigorous analytical, physical, and computational methods with data driven products to enhance decision making and risk management. Roles & Responsibilities: As an Intermediate PCB Designer, you will lead PCB layout projects in Altium Designer, working closely with electrical, RF and systems engineers to turn design concepts into manufacturable hardware. This role requires a candidate with attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate will be able to take charge of the PCB design lifecycle, help maintain the PCB design libraries and collaborate with fabrication partners to address build issues.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in PCB design and layout, including RF, microwave and High-Density Interconnect designs.
  • Advanced proficiency with Altium Designer Enterprise; experience with Altium On-Prem
  • Demonstrated expertise in high-frequency RF, high-speed digital and complex multi-layer PCB design.
  • Strong understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturing), DFT (Design for Test) and regulatory standards (IPC-A-610, IPC-7351, etc.).
  • Experience with signal integrity, differential pairs, impedance control and EMI mitigation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to document and present technical information to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to maintain or obtain a government security clearance; current Secret clearance preferred.
  • Per the U.S. Government’s eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint).
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Nice To Haves

  • IPC CID+ certification or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with data management systems and collaboration tools (Confluence, JIRA, Git).
  • Experience automating design processes with Altium scripting and/or Python.
  • Direct experience with advanced packaging: high-density interposers, substrates, die stacking, and wire bond design.
  • Hands-on experience with multi-layer packaging, HDI, blind/buried vias, BGAs, and RF design for test.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements (FCC, CE, UL) and compliance testing.
  • Experience developing and interpreting fabrication drawings and collaborating with fabrication partners.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute complex PCB design and layout projects using Altium Designer, supporting rapid prototyping and advanced R&D initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, RF, mechanical and systems engineers to translate novel concepts into manufacturable hardware.
  • Define layer stack-ups, apply advanced design constraints and optimize component placement for manufacturability, reliability and performance.
  • Ensure robust signal integrity, controlled impedance and EMI/EMC compliance for RF and high-speed digital designs.
  • Generate, verify and manage all manufacturing documentation in accordance with IPC and JEDEC standards.
  • Manage and maintain Altium enterprise host, software and license infrastructure; interface with IT and coordinate network related initiatives.
  • Track annual ECAD tooling cost, utilization and ROI.
  • Support library maintenance, data management and peer reviews to ensure quality and knowledge sharing across MITRE Labs projects.
  • Support Altium integration with other software and supply chain management systems
  • Teach and mentor engineers on Altium library usage, best practices and SOP
  • Participate in and facilitate design reviews, knowledge exchanges and technical mentoring within the Labs community.
  • Contribute to process improvement and automation initiatives, including Altium scripting and workflow optimization.
