Why Hover wants you Hover is seeking a Payroll Manager to own and operate our payroll function as we grow. This role is responsible for end-to-end payroll processing, payroll compliance, and ongoing process improvement, ensuring employees are paid accurately, compliantly, and on time every cycle. You’ll work closely with Accounting, HR, and Revenue Operations to maintain clean data flow and support accurate reporting. This is a high-autonomy individual contributor role for a payroll professional who values precision and efficiency. You’ll own the full payroll lifecycle, improve workflows, and reduce manual work in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment. As Hover scales, you’ll also gain hands-on exposure to equity administration, offering meaningful growth while remaining grounded in payroll operations.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of payroll experience, with exposure to payroll accounting.
  • Experience working in a technology-forward, fast-paced environment, such as a high-growth startup or scaling tech company, where priorities evolve and systems are continuously improving.
  • Deep hands-on experience with ADP Workforce Now.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Solid understanding of accounting fundamentals, including journal entries and reconciliations.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented working style with comfort operating independently, navigating ambiguity, and driving improvements without constant oversight.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with NetSuite preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Owning end-to-end U.S. payroll processing (semi-monthly) for exempt and non-exempt employees in a multi-state environment.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact with ADP Workforce Now for payroll processing, reporting, and troubleshooting.
  • Owning payroll execution for commissions in close partnership with Revenue Operations, ensuring accurate calculation, validation, and timely payout.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations, including new state registrations and agency correspondence.
  • Partnering with HR to ensure accurate employee data integration for payroll, benefits, and reporting.
  • Performing FSA, HSA, and benefits reconciliations and resolving discrepancies.
  • Preparing payroll journal entries and supporting monthly close activities.
  • Responding to employee payroll inquiries clearly and promptly.
  • Maintaining strong internal controls, documentation, and audit-ready payroll records.
  • Supporting year-end audits related to payroll and benefits.
  • Supporting administration of employee equity programs, including stock option grants, exercises and modifications.
  • Maintaining accurate equity records and supporting quarterly and year-end audits.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities to automate and improve payroll and equity workflows.
  • Redesigning processes to reduce manual work while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
  • Supporting ad hoc payroll, equity, or accounting projects as the business grows.
