About The Position

We are seeking a Payroll Director to join a large nonprofit dedicated to strengthening children, youth, and families across the state. In this role, you’ll help ensure the 1,000+ employees are supported through accurate, timely, and mission aligned payroll leadership. As the Payroll Director you will lead a collaborative payroll team and partner closely with HR, Finance, and program leadership to ensure accurate, compliant, and efficient payroll in a complex, grant funded, highly regulated environment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, HR, or related field
• 5+ years of payroll leadership experience in a high volume, audit focused environment
• Advanced knowledge of California wage and hour and multi state payroll
• Experience with enterprise systems
• Strong communication, coaching, and relationship building skills

Nice To Haves

• CPP strongly preferred
• UKG experience a plus

Responsibilities

• Oversee semi monthly payroll for a large, multi state workforce
• Lead, mentor, and develop a dedicated payroll team
• Build strong, service oriented partnerships across the agency
• Guide the organization through fiscal, 403(b), workers’ compensation, governmental, and wage & hour audits
• Conduct internal audits to ensure ongoing accuracy and compliance
• Strengthen payroll procedures and champion process improvements
• Provide final approval on payrolls and step in with hands on support when needed
