About The Position

The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) is looking for an accountant to become our Payroll Accountant. This position is responsible for administering payroll and ensuring the timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions, including salaries, commissions, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions. Also ensures the agency is in compliance with federal and state payroll requirements.

Requirements

  • Methods and techniques of automated financial systems
  • Reference materials such as federal regulations, Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS), applicable agency manuals, and policies and procedures

  • Maintaining accounting records through automated accounting systems, including computers and mainframes
  • Training and reviewing the work of others

  • Learn and adhere to the rules, regulations, and procedures established for the work system or agency

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field. One (1) year of experience as an Accountant I or equivalent.
  • Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation.
  • If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
  • In an effort to maintain a safe environment, all employees are required to take a Tuberculosis (TB) test during their New Employee Orientation and every year thereafter.
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
  • Three to five (3-5) years of accounting experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel
  • One (1) year of experience as an Accountant I or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, examines, and analyzes accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance with the State of Arizona Accounting Manual (SAAM), agency policies, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or other specific accounting requirements
  • Analyzes, processes, and approves fiscal transactions
  • Reconciles processed work, verifies entries, and compares system reports
  • Analyzes financial information and documentation, completes reconciliations, and prepares various financial reports
  • Maintains documentation accuracy in accordance with polices and procedures
  • Resolves accounting-related issues with internal and external audits and stakeholders
  • Supports internal and external audit requirements
  • Uses various accounting systems to retrieve and review data files, analyze information, and identify inconsistencies
  • Researches and identifies potential problem areas, variances, and resolutions
  • Reviews, requests, and communicates with other agency staff to obtain information and substantiations for transaction corrections
  • Serves as a technical expert and liaison on accounting issues for central office, customers, and complex business offices
  • Implements and communicates new accounting or financial procedures
  • Surveys operations for accounting needs
  • Recommends, develops, or maintains solutions to business and financial problems
  • Continually assesses areas to build operational efficiencies and improve internal processes
  • Routinely reviews and updates process documentation and standards of work
  • Provides recommendations to improve information flow, process efficiency, and customer satisfaction
  • Drives on state business
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment
