About The Position

Finance employees receive, account for, monitor, and design internal controls to safeguard sacred funds (donated confidentially in obedience to God's commandments) for the Church's religious mission under the direction of senior ecclesiastical leaders. This position is a fully qualified or journey-level professional accounting position in which the incumbent provides professional accounting expertise in applying appropriate accounting principles to analyze present payroll operations; assembling and analyzing data and transactions; preparing statements and reports; and performing internal audits and reconciliation of system accounts. As such, an incumbent is responsible for the more complex activities associated with maintaining and processing payroll data, reconciling ledger accounts and providing financial statements and reports. Responsibilities An Accountant, Senior in Payroll Processing, performs the more complex accounting functions in a variety of different areas of payroll. In general, incumbents in this position perform the following types of functions:

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting (or Finance or Business Management) is required.
  • A minimum of four to five years of professional accounting experience is required for this position with preference given to corporate payroll experience.
  • Incumbents must demonstrate a well-grounded knowledge of financial and accounting theory and a knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Should be conversant with and have familiarity with various standard accounting reports, financial policies and procedures.
  • Have the ability to analyze complex payroll accounting problems and propose changes in the payroll system.

Nice To Haves

  • CPP or FPC certification preferred.
  • Experience working with Oracle Fusion Cloud is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Church accounting systems is preferred.
  • A graduate degree in Accounting or Finance, MBA, or CPA, may be considered an equivalent of one year of this experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure garnishments are calculated and withheld correctly for each court order and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Initiate payments of withheld garnishments to the appropriate authorities or third-party vendor.
  • Generate and/or validate interrogatories and employee documents to ensure on-time submission.
  • Maintain documents in required repositories.
  • Participate in and ensure processing for specific payroll groups.
  • Participate in and ensure processing of non-standard earnings, taxable imputed earnings, and voluntary deduction elections.
  • Prepare special studies and reports for departments and organizations as required.
  • Prepare journal entries and other adjustments to correct errors.
  • Review Canadian Retirement deductions and make necessary reconciliations, investigations, and correcting entries.
  • Work closely with DMBA and third-party vendors to ensure accurate data is being sent and returned.
  • Investigate, track, and respond to employee and bank requests for lost or miss-processed payroll checks in a timely manner.
  • Participate in user testing for payroll related system implementations, upgrades and bug fixes.
  • Stay up to date with rules and regulations concerning payroll and work with HR as needed to ensure compliance education, and employee support.
  • Assist in evaluating and motivating employees under the direction of a supervisor.
  • May coordinate accounting matters with other departments, locations, and divisions.
  • Act as a resource for Accountant 1 and Accountant 2 incumbents being trained in Church accounting systems.
