About The Position

The Paving/Placement & Finish Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of all concrete paving operations. This leader oversees crews engaged in the placement, finishing, curing, and jointing of concrete pavement to ensure production goals, project schedules, safety requirements, and quality standards are consistently met. The Superintendent acts as the primary field leader for paving operations, coordinating manpower, equipment, and materials while fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and teamwork.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7-10 years of concrete paving and finishing experience in heavy civil construction, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong understanding of slipform paving operations, concrete finishing techniques, curing methods, and quality control requirements.
  • Familiarity with TxDOT, FAA, Corps of Engineers, or other DOT/municipal paving specifications.
  • Working knowledge of surveying, grades, and machine control.
  • Proven leadership and crew management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Competency in documenting field activities and producing accurate daily reports.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise paving, placement, and finishing crews, ensuring proper techniques and safe practices are followed.
  • Provide hands-on guidance and coaching to foremen and craft employees to achieve optimal production and finish quality.
  • Ensure crews adhere to company safety protocols and project-specific work plans.
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager to plan and sequence daily paving activities, coordinate concrete delivery logistics with batch team, manage slipform paving operations.
  • Monitor equipment utilization and coordinate with equipment operations to ensure availability and maintenance of pavers, spreaders, tining machines, and finishing tools.
  • Oversee quality control processes-ensuring alignment, grade, thickness, smoothness, and finish meet project specifications.
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, and Quality Control staff to resolve field challenges and maintain schedule integrity.
  • Communicate with subcontractors, inspectors, and owners' representatives to ensure alignment on project requirements and expectations.
  • Track and report production quantities, crew hours, Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs), equipment usage daily.

  • Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members, supporting workforce development and succession planning.
