GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION: Patrol deputy will perform a variety of routine and complex public safety work enforcing laws and protecting the public.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required
  • Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified academy training and graduation required
  • Must be able to meet physical, mental and background standards
  • Current and valid Colorado Driver’s License
  • Current Colorado State Peace Officer (POST) Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Two-year community college degree or vocational school training preference in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field preferred
  • At least two years patrol experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Enforce and carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
  • Patrol county roads, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law including fire watch, observing for suspicious persons, unusual circumstances, traffic violations and hazardous conditions.
  • Respond to emergency radio calls, investigate as necessary and take appropriate law enforcement actions.
  • Undertake community oriented police work and assist citizens with such matters as locked or stalled vehicles, crime prevention, traffic safety, Neighborhood Watch, etc.
  • Investigate criminal law violations, obtain evidence, compile information regarding crimes, prepare cases for filing of charges, and testify in court.
  • Provide highway safety through enforcement of traffic laws including using radar for speed detection, unusual driving habits, and violations; provide traffic control, animal control, and motorist assistance.
  • Respond to calls of alleged crimes and investigate, secure area and evidence, make arrests, issue summonses, take photos, request assistance and/or back up, transport suspects to Detention Center, book, complete incident or case reports, and warrantless arrest affidavits.
  • Mediating, negotiation, and diffusing conflict situations including domestic disputes, runaways, fights, drunkenness, civil disturbances.
  • Complete daily log, incident and case reports, vehicle inspections, affidavits, summonses, search warrants, arrest warrants, M-1 medical reports, and various required paperwork.
  • Assist Human Services Department, Department of Health, detention, dispatch, state patrol, police departments, parks and recreation, wildlife, Coroner, and Bureau of Land Management, Emergency Medical Services, and other agencies as appropriate to enforce the law and provide support and safety in the execution of their duties.
  • Provide physical force and support in apprehension and detainment of suspects, criminals, and in resolving disputes.
  • Work with courts, probation, Alternative Sentencing, parole officers, and District Attorney seeking and providing information, advice and consultation.
  • Perform emergency accident response including security of area, traffic control, first aid, take measurements, investigate causes, secure assistance, and emergency medical support.
  • Interrogate and interview suspects, citizens, informants, witnesses and victims in the development of case profiles and investigations.
  • Maintain vehicle and personal equipment in clean, professional, mechanically sound and ready condition.
  • Complete time sheets, preventive maintenance forms, safety checklists, and various assigned reports.
  • Transport inmates, criminals, and prisoners in a secure manner.
  • On a selection basis, may certify/qualify in Range Qualification quarterly, Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, Marijuana Eradication, Colorado Bureau of Investigation Certified, Intoxilyzer, Defensive Driving, and 40 hours in-service training.
  • Answer phones, take and relay messages, operate radio.
  • Work well with others in a cooperative team atmosphere showing respect and support.
  • Perform other similar and related duties as assigned.
  • Perform animal control duties as specified in Sheriff’s Policy.
  • Should the Board of County Commissioners or another authorized representative issue a local disaster declaration in Delta County, all Delta County employees may be called upon to serve as disaster service workers.
