Requirements

  • Entry-level position with no specific prior experience required.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Moderate physical exertion and stamina required for handling patients and equipment.
  • Manual dexterity in the handling of patients and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients and/or patient-related items to their destinations.
  • Lift and transfer patients to and from wheelchairs, gurneys, or beds.
  • Complete all transport requests in accordance with established protocol.
  • Verify correct patient identification by comparing information from notification of request to patient wristband.
  • Alert nursing staff immediately to any signs of patient distress or equipment malfunction.
  • Consult with nursing personnel before lifting and transferring patients and obtain assistance when necessary.
  • Utilize wheelchairs, gurneys, and other approved rolling stock to carry out the transport of patients.
  • Notify the Patient Transport Coordinator when assignments are initiated, completed, delayed, or cancelled, or of any needs and/or concerns.
  • Collect and return wheelchairs and gurneys to the proper holding areas.
  • Respond to emergency activities, such as code calls, disasters, etc., under departmental scope of service.
  • Notify appropriate staff (e.g., nurse, clinician, technician, etc.) upon arrival and departure with patient.
  • Disinfect transport equipment before and after use.
  • Report equipment in need of repairs.
  • Keep accurate transport records, as required.
  • Participate in the orientation of other staff, as assigned.
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required.
