About The Position

The Patient Transport Associate is responsible for the transportation and transfer of all patients to and from inpatient rooms, clinical testing areas, and procedural areas. This role involves using designated methods such as wheelchairs or stretchers. Key duties include observing patients for adverse changes during transport, verifying transport tasks, reporting completion, and ensuring equipment is properly assembled, cleaned, maintained, and delivered. The associate also assists staff with patient transfers, maintains a clean and organized work area, and adheres to all safety, isolation, and contamination policies and procedures. Furthermore, the role requires knowledge of disaster protocols, participation in disaster drills, understanding and demonstrating patient satisfaction initiatives, attending mandatory in-services annually, and participating in the department's performance improvement program.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to pass hospital administered Basic Skills test.
  • BLS CERTIFICATION FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION REQUIRED.

Responsibilities

  • Transport and transfer all patients to and from inpatient rooms, clinical testing areas and procedural areas.
  • Provide the transportation of patients as assigned by means of the designated method (wheelchair or stretcher).
  • Report intended transport or return of patient to the nurse in charge of area.
  • Observe patients for adverse changes in condition or appearance during transport.
  • Verify transport task with person at location of assignment and report completion of assignment as appropriate.
  • Assure that equipment is properly assembled, cleaned, maintained and delivered.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures concerning lifting, moving and transporting patients.
  • Transport or transfer non-monitored/stable patients as directed.
  • Ensure IV drip rates and sites, oxygen volume flow or other special equipment and appliances are checked by staff RN prior to patient transport, observing equipment during transport and notifies RN of any changes.
  • Follow procedures for properly identifying patients prior to transport to or from a service area.
  • Transport assigned patients by means of designated conveyance (stretcher or wheelchair) to clinical service areas for treatment or diagnostic studies, returning patient to room at the appropriate time.
  • Ensure stretcher pads are wiped down and sanitized appropriately.
  • Assist staff in turning, lifting and transferring patients from bed/treatment tables to stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of wheelchairs, stretchers, and equipment.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of any damaged or unserviceable equipment, following established safety policies concerning labeling such equipment and removing them from use immediately.
  • Assist with post-mortem transport.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area as directed by Director or designee of assigned unit.
  • Follow all isolation/contamination policies and procedures in assigned work areas.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of patient transport associate role in event of a disaster (internal or external).
  • Participate in disaster drills.
  • Understand and demonstrate role in achieving patient satisfaction initiatives.
  • Attend mandatory in-services annually.
  • Participate in the department's performance improvement program.
