The Transportation Aide is responsible for transporting patients and/or specimens upon request throughout the assigned area. A day in the life of a Patient Transport Aide at Hackensack Meridian Health includes transporting patients by the use of wheelchairs and with stretcher/bed transports, ensuring safe handling of patients to prevent falls. The aide also transports patients to and from appropriate units or Imaging Modalities within expected time frames, ensuring the patient's chart is brought along. Regular communication with Dispatch/Modality/Unit is essential to notify of task receipt, changes or delays in transport, and task completion. The aide ensures that patient support apparatus such as IV pumps and oxygen tanks are handled safely during transport and is responsible for removing unsafe or unclean equipment from service. The aide follows established isolation protocols and uses two patient identifiers to correctly identify patients. Additionally, the aide transports specimens to the laboratory and delivers blood and blood products in a timely manner, adhering to proper protocols. The aide participates in automated systems to assist with patient throughput and must be able to lift a minimum of 10 lbs., push and pull a minimum of 50 lbs., and stand for the length of the shift. The aide identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies care accordingly, communicating effectively with patients and caregivers. Environmental duties include the pickup and disposal of recycling/trash and linen removal as requested, adhering to cleaning requirements and procedures.
