About The Position

The Patient Service Representative (PSR) - Patient Access is responsible for greeting and checking in patients, ensuring their information is complete and accurate, and collecting patient responsibility as identified in the pre-registration process. The role involves completing the registration process for walk-in patients, verifying insurance benefits, and communicating payment expectations to patients. The PSR also identifies patients needing financial assistance and collaborates with Financial Advocates to coordinate financial resources. The position requires monitoring patient flow, performing visit closures, scheduling patient visits, and maintaining excellent public relations with patients and clinical staff. The PSR must also stay informed about Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party payer requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 1 year of experience in customer service or clerical/office experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and understand issues and problems.
  • Knowledge of Medicare/HIPAA/EMTALA rules and regulations.
  • Mathematical aptitude and effective communication skills.
  • Understanding of basic human anatomy, medical terminology, and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency including experience with insurance verification tools and EPIC electronic medical record.

Responsibilities

  • Greets and checks in patients arriving for their appointments.
  • Ensures patient information is complete and accurate.
  • Collects patient responsibility as identified in the pre-registration process.
  • Completes the registration process on walk-in patients, verifies and/or updates patient demographic and insurance information.
  • Verifies insurance benefits, obtains/calculates patient responsibility and requests payment.
  • Communicates to patients the organization expectation of payment at time of service.
  • Identifies patients in need of financial assistance and refers them to Financial Advocate.
  • Collaborates with Financial Advocate to coordinate patient's financial resources.
  • Monitors patient flow to ensure efficient and courteous care.
  • Performs visit closure, including checking out patients and collecting additional patient responsibility.
  • Schedules patient visits using established guidelines.
  • Assists with new caregiver onboarding.
  • Works assigned EPIC work queues, following department workflow.
  • Maintains excellent public relations with patients, families, and clinical staff.
  • Proactively communicates customer service issues and process improvement opportunities.
  • Maintains knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party payer requirements.
