About The Position

The Patient Safety Observer monitors patients remotely via video monitor or at the bedside to ensure patient safety while under observation. This role involves providing continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients, with the first line of action being to verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at-risk behaviors. The observer is responsible for summoning nursing staff if the patient requires assistance and must be knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related hospital policies.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent required.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and remain attentive to patient.
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills required.
  • Proficiency in both verbal and written communications.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Efficiency in multitasking and able to prioritize simultaneous situations.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the video monitoring software.
  • Maintains visual observation of patient at all times, either monitoring at the bedside or using video monitors.
  • Verbally redirects patients at the bedside or over digital two-way audio device.
  • Summons nursing staff if the patient requires assistance or to alert to an emergency situation.
  • Participates in report with on-coming Patient Safety Observer when arriving for shift and upon completion of shift.
  • Reviews pertinent information and behaviors.
  • Provides patient with explanations as necessary but does not counsel or provide opinions.
  • Provides floor staff with information in a timely fashion when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others.
  • Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues.
  • Assures patient environment safety and seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard.
  • Demonstrates safe work practice and attitude, follows safety rules, and participates in safety programs.
  • Maintains patient dignity and privacy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
