Provides direct observation of patients placed on Suicide/Self Destructive Behavior or other patients requiring constant attendance, in order to provide maximum protection of both patients and staff. The role involves performing regular checks of the patient environment to maintain safety and observing patient for behaviors. This includes alert observation through sitting as a 1:1 supervision in patient room, camera monitoring 7 or more patients at one time, or completing every 15-minute safety checks for 4 or more patients. The Patient Safety Assistant participates in unit conferences, receives assignments and handoff from the charge nurse or nurse in charge of patient, and completes required charting or paperwork. They assist with admission and discharge processes, unit/room orientation, and reinforce information given to patients. The assistant also helps with activities of daily living according to practitioner orders, always accompanies patients when out of the room, and provides age-appropriate interaction, encouragement, support, and reinforces positive behavior and safety plans. Additionally, the role includes acting as a preceptor for orientation and training of other Patient Safety Assistant staff and assisting in maintaining a safe and clean environment through frequent environmental checks.
