About The Position

The Patient Safety Assistant is responsible for the promotion of patient safety and companionship for an assigned patient, which may include pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Responsibilities include observation and reporting of patient activities and behaviors, as well as appropriate response interventions to ensure patient safety. The Patient Safety Assistant will demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patients, their families, and other healthcare providers, while practicing confidentiality and safety procedures as defined by agency policies. This position provides services in accordance with policy and procedure manuals and requires competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
  • Experience in a health care delivery setting preferred
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients/families and others
  • Skill and proficiency in oral and written grammar and communication
  • Must have home telephone or telephone contact
  • Safe patient handling required
  • Maintains neat and orderly work environment
  • Knowledge to assist in patient turns and transfers to bathroom
  • Knowledge to assist in feeding patients
  • Uses correct body positioning and proper body mechanics to avoid injury
  • Utilizes safe work practices and personal protective equipment when necessary
  • Must be available to work on short notice

Responsibilities

  • Observation and prevention of unsafe patient behavior/activity (80%)
  • Communicating with the responsible R.N. about patient status and pertinent input to facilitate care planning (10%)
  • Accompanying patients for diagnostic tests occasionally (5%)
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly environment (5%)
