The Patient Representative provides a positive patient encounter as the first impression of the hospital. This role ensures the accuracy of medical, demographic, insurance, and financial information through interviews and verification of insurance benefits. The representative uses ACMC systems and applications to capture and communicate data to Health Information systems, patient care departments, and Patient Financial Services for billing purposes. Responsibilities include accurately identifying patients, obtaining consent signatures required for clinical treatment, entering appropriate diagnosis, procedure, and physician information for medical records, and communicating with insurance companies and physicians regarding coverage and authorization requirements. The representative also utilizes online, web-based, and telecommunication verification systems to ensure accuracy and expedite payment, collects co-pays and deductibles, and ensures compliance with local, state, federal, third-party EMTALA, and JCAHO regulations. Additionally, the role involves performing all ADT functions necessary to facilitate effective utilization of beds.

  • Enter diagnosis, procedure, and physician information into medical records.
  • Communicate with insurance companies and physicians regarding coverage and authorization requirements.
  • Utilize online and telecommunication verification systems to ensure accuracy and expedite payment.
  • Collect co-pays and deductibles from patients.
  • Ensure compliance with EMTALA and JCAHO regulations.
  • Perform ADT functions to facilitate effective bed utilization.
  • High School Diploma required; college or business school education desired.
  • Excellent verbal persuasion and communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology or completion of a course within one year of employment preferred.
  • Basic PC software application knowledge and ability to use multiple data systems preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of billing and insurance preferred.
  • Two years of customer service experience dealing with the public required.
  • Two years of patient financial services background preferred.
  • Experience dealing with the public in person and on the phone required.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex healthcare environment.
  • Keyboarding skills essential (40 WPM).
  • Excellent communication and organization skills required.
  • Medical terminology course completion within one year of employment.
  • Experience in registration, billing, medical office, customer service, follow-up, or collections.
