The ideal candidate must be comfortable working directly with patients who express difficulty in paying for medical services, assisting them with the medical assistance application process, and identifying those eligible for a charity care program.

Requirements

  • 2+ years Healthcare Customer Service, Revenue Cycle or Healthcare Insurance experience

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Vocational degree in Healthcare or Business related area of study
  • Bachelor's degree Healthcare or Business related area of study
  • Patient Accounts or Patient Access experience
  • Financial Counseling experience
  • Experience with clinic/hospital, patient guarantor accounts, billing, insurance, and charity care/financial discount programs

Responsibilities

  • Assists patients and/or families with access to a variety of financial resources by evaluating the financial situation of patients in accordance with regulatory compliance while maintaining patient confidentiality and dignity.
  • Determines eligibility for financial assistance or any payer/assistance source, and provides necessary assistance to enroll in available government programs.
  • Screens newly diagnosed patients to identify those who may be appropriate for financial navigation services.
  • Meets with patients to discuss insurance status, benefits coverage as it relates to their expected treatment plan, and the estimated cost of the planned treatment.
  • Evaluates patient's qualifications for financial and copay assistance programs.
  • Coordinates the completion of materials related to patient financial assistance programs.
  • Serves as the liaison between the patient, the medical team, and assistance program(s).
  • Ensures all demographic, insurance and eligibility information obtained are up-to-date.
  • Identifies and evaluates how to optimize the patient's health insurance benefits.
  • Screens and monitors patients on a regular basis for risk of developing financial toxicity.
  • Assesses need for referral to social work, financial counseling or outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Educates colleagues and patient financial service representatives about patient financial navigation services.
  • Tracks and reports on key metrics to allow for review of success of financial navigation program.
  • Maintains appropriate knowledge to perform assigned duties via internal and external educational opportunities.
