About The Position

We are adding a Patient Financial Counselor to our growing revenue management team. This team member is responsible for assisting patients and their families in understanding and accessing financial resources to cover medical expenses. This role involves evaluating patients’ financial situations, determining eligibility for assistance programs, charity care, payment plans, and other financial aid options. Schedule Full-time, Monday – Friday, 8am-4pm Work is onsite at our Johnston location

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in healthcare financial counseling, patient access, or related field.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality regarding the affairs of clients, staff, their families, and ChildServe business.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships and demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in reading, writing, and speaking the English language.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in accounting, Business Management, or Healthcare related field
  • Knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and other public assistance programs

Responsibilities

  • Conduct financial screenings and interviews with patients to determine eligibility of Hospital Charity Program.
  • Obtain and document patient demographic/financial information.
  • Verify insurance eligibility when applicable.
  • Prepare payment estimates and payment plans based on insurance information such as deductibles, co-pay, etc.
  • Document all patient interactions and financial counseling activities in the electronic health record (EHR) or financial systems.
  • Monitor and track application status for Hospital Charity Program and communicate outcomes to patients and internal stakeholders.
  • Educate patients and families on available financial resources, including Medicaid, charity care, and hospital-sponsored assistance programs.
  • Provide compassionate and culturally sensitive support to patients experiencing financial hardship.
  • Advocate for patients by negotiating payment arrangements.
  • Collaborate with case management, billing, and registration teams to ensure accurate and timely processing of financial assistance.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local assistance programs and eligibility requirements.
  • Act as the primary liaison, both in-person and via telephone, for patients regarding inquiries about insurance coverage, billing, and payment options.
  • Manage outstanding balances by issuing patient statements, making follow-up calls, and coordinating with collection agencies.
