About The Position

The Patient Financial Counselor at Billings Clinic serves as the primary financial contact for patients with self-pay balances or inadequate financial resources. This role is crucial in securing sponsorship for patients unable to pay and collecting payments from those who can. The counselor engages with patients through financial counseling during pre-registration, at the time of service, and post-service collections, ensuring that the financial interests of the organization are upheld while providing support to patients in need.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in finance or healthcare preferred.
• Experience in financial counseling or patient financial services is preferred.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and families.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of Medicaid, SSI, SSDI, and other financial assistance programs.
• Experience in a healthcare setting, particularly in patient financial services.

Responsibilities

• Perform financial counseling for self-pay, MVA, and commercial insurance patients with high deductibles.
• Conduct interviews with patients and family members to assess financial situations and eligibility for assistance programs.
• Complete daily follow-up on outstanding self-pay balances, including in-person and telephone communications with patients.
• Establish and monitor payment plans according to policy and procedures, renegotiating as necessary based on patient circumstances.
• Negotiate discounts with customers, including patients, attorneys, and collection agencies, within established guidelines.
• Coordinate dispute resolutions with Risk Management, Department Managers, Coding, and Compliance.
