About The Position

The Patient Financial Advocate (PFA) at Eskenazi Health plays a crucial role in providing financial advocacy and registration support for patients upon their admission to the hospital. This position focuses on assessing patients' financial needs, assisting uninsured and underinsured individuals in applying for state and federal programs, and ensuring maximum reimbursement for services rendered. The PFA serves as a liaison between patients and various stakeholders, fostering effective communication and support in a culturally diverse environment.

Requirements

  • Accredited Bachelor's degree preferred or two years of experience in registration and financial counseling.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Certification in Healthcare Business Insights within 60 days of hire.
  • Indiana Navigators Certification within 45 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in Registration and Financial Counseling.
  • Screen patients to determine eligibility for State Medicaid and Federal Disability programs, completing the application process.
  • Perform registration functions, validate patient demographic data, and verify medical benefits.
  • Educate patients about affordability programs, qualified health plans, and their rights when using insurance.
  • Consult with patients to provide affordable payment plan options in accordance with Eskenazi Health guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of Eskenazi Health's Financial Assistance Policy and procedures.
  • Calculate and provide service estimates to patients.
  • Follow up with the state on pending eligibility cases and contact patients for additional information as needed.
  • Ensure proper addition and termination of coverage, initiating billing when appropriate.
  • Verify information on accounts to determine insurance coordination of benefits.
  • Assist with special projects, audits, reporting, and research as required.
  • Maintain departmental work queues and reports as necessary.
  • Address patient billing inquiries and interpret statement data to resolve accounts.
  • Document patient account notes for all interactions in EPIC and/or Financial Assistance program.
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards set by the department.
