In the Float Pool, you will work with diverse populations of patients in numerous units, departments and/or locations while learning from many of our best caregivers. As a Patient Companion, you will help facilitate Cleveland Clinic's mission by providing compassionate and top-quality care. In this role, you will assist RNs, physicians, dietitians, and other staff in coordinating and fulfilling treatment plans. You will also find a culture that encourages professional growth, educational development, and career success. A caregiver in this position works nights from 6:45PM – 7:15AM, including every other weekend and 2 holidays per year.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of a hospital-based patient companion training program OR equivalent experience OR enrollment at an accredited school of nursing and completion of a nursing fundamentals course or completion of a hospital-based NA/PC orientation
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross - If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it within three months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, provide constant observation only for safety for three to four patients.
  • Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.
  • Accompany and assist patients at all times, including transport, tests, transfers and ambulation.
  • Collect patient specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
  • Follow protocols and initiate CPR and other emergency measures as required.
  • Acknowledge patient concerns and needs and notify appropriate staff for assistance.
  • Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
