Indian River Hospital’s Emergency Department has multi-disciplinary care teams, and the leading-edge technology needed to diagnose and treat patients effectively, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a Patient Companion in the Emergency Department, you will participate in the delivery of patient care in an effective and efficient manner and assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients. Your work will ensure that patient care is effectively prioritized as this is a very busy ER. A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00AM – 7:00PM.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of a hospital-based patient companion training program OR equivalent experience OR enrollment at an accredited school of nursing and completion of a nursing fundamentals course or completion of a hospital-based NA/PC orientation
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross - If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it within three months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, you will observe three to four patients.
  • Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.
  • Accompany and assist patients at all times, including during transport, tests, transfers and ambulation.
  • Collect patient specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
  • Initiate CPR and other emergency measures.
  • Acknowledge patient concerns/needs and notify appropriate caregivers for assistance when necessary.
  • Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
