About The Position

Geisinger is proud to offer a per diem Patient Companion market leading pay rates, up to $3 shift differentials for evening, nights and weekend shifts and up to $40,000 in financial support to become an RN. The Patient Companion provides a safe environment, companionship and supportive care for patients that require constant observation as identified by a nurse or physician. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe environment for any patient requiring 1:1 supervision, constant observation of the patient, accompanying the patient for necessary reasons, and assisting with meals and other basic needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.
  • Basic Life Support Certification required.
  • Clinical skills and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Teamwork and preceptor skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides a safe environment, companionship and supportive care for patients requiring constant observation.
  • Maintains constant observation of the patient.
  • Accompanies the patient if they must leave the unit for reasons identified by the care provider.
  • Maintains a safe, private, and comfortable therapeutic environment.
  • Redirects impulsive and harmful behavior.
  • Remains in clear sight of the patient at all times, unless otherwise instructed by nursing staff.
  • Calls for assistance when unable to redirect the patient or there is a potential for self-injury.
  • Participates in report at the beginning and end of shift, informing the Registered Nurse of pertinent information.
  • Accompanies the patient to all clinical tests, procedures, or appointments off the patient unit.
  • Engages in conversation with the patient to keep them focused.
  • Assists patients with meals when appropriate.
  • Assists with bed making and activates bed/chair alarms.
  • Assists staff with walking patients.
