About The Position

UPMC Somerset is seeking a compassionate and skilled Patient Care Technician to support our Same Day Services team. This role is ideal for candidates with prior patient care experience who are committed to delivering high-quality care in a fast-paced outpatient setting.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of EIC training program OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program.
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
• Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal.
• Act 33 with renewal.
• Act 34 with renewal.
• Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.

Nice To Haves

• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification.
• Currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program.

Responsibilities

• Provide routine patient care and assist with procedures and daily living activities under nurse or physician direction.
• Perform core nursing assistant duties including vital signs, blood glucose checks, I&O, weights, specimen collection, and Foley care.
• Complete at least four advanced tasks such as phlebotomy, EKGs, simple dressings, catheter care, or IV removal.
• Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies and report changes in patient status to the RN.
• Maintain effective communication with team members and contribute to unit-wide activities like call light response and patient transport.
• Educate patients and families under RN guidance and assist with restraint protocols per hospital policy.
• Demonstrate professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to workplace safety.
• Adhere strictly to hospital policies, safety procedures, and infection control standards.
• Participate in department initiatives, receive feedback constructively, and seek opportunities for growth.
• Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed to support department operations.
