About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) as a non-licensed team member, providing essential direct patient care and supporting the unit’s clinical operations. The PCT assists with activities of daily living, mobility, and continuous patient observation, including suicide prevention, while ensuring a safe, clean, and organized environment for patients.

Requirements

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or completion of IU Health PCA education program.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate care procedures for adult patients.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of patient care procedures and standards.
  • Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain mental alertness and handle high-stress situations.
  • Ability to concentrate amid interruptions and variable noise levels.
  • Knowledge of procedures, equipment, and software related to patient care.
  • Understanding of infection control principles and aseptic techniques.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive movements safely.
  • Basic reading, math, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility.
  • Support continuous patient monitoring, including suicide prevention measures.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly patient environment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Follow established procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
  • Exercise sound judgment and initiative in problem-solving and prioritizing tasks.
  • Adhere to infection control practices and aseptic techniques.
  • Support documentation, equipment management, and supply delivery as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of patient safety and comfort at all times.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including repetitive movements, with safety and accuracy.
  • Read and perform basic math calculations related to patient care.
  • Organize tasks efficiently and attend to details to ensure quality care.
