About The Position

The Patient Care Technician works under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) as a non-licensed team member. The Patient Care Technician provides essential direct patient care to designated patients and supports the overall functioning of the patient care team. The role focuses on assisting with activities of daily living, mobility, safety, and maintaining a clean and safe environment for patients.

Requirements

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or completion of IU Health PCA education program.
  • Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served.
  • Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain focus amid frequent interruptions and noise.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and initiative in problem resolution.
  • Ability to manage a high workload and set priorities effectively.
  • Knowledge of infection control principles and aseptic techniques.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and repetitive movements safely.
  • Basic math skills and reading comprehension.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, toileting, and feeding.
  • Support patient mobility, including transfers and ambulation, ensuring safety at all times.
  • Provide continuous observation, including suicide prevention and safety monitoring.
  • Maintain the patient's surroundings in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to meet patient needs effectively and efficiently.
  • Follow established procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members to ensure quality care.
  • Exercise judgment and initiative in problem-solving and prioritizing tasks.
  • Maintain infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including repetitive movements and patient handling, safely and appropriately.
  • Read and perform basic math skills to assist with medication and supply management as directed.
  • Attend to details and organize tasks to meet patient care needs within limited timeframes.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene and practice principles of infection prevention.
