About The Position

The PACU at UPMC Hamot is hiring a full-time Patient Care Technician! Schedule: Monday–Friday, 5:30 AM–2:00 PM (No weekends or holidays) Experience: Minimum of one year of patient care experience required Note: Title and starting pay rate may vary based on years of experience. Responsibilities Direct Patient Care Provide patient care as directed by the RN, including all activities of daily living (ADLs): bathing, feeding, toileting, transporting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning. Perform UPMC nursing core responsibilities for nursing assistants: vital signs, blood glucose testing, I&O, weights, urine specimen collection, Foley care, telemetry monitor application, HAC and patient safety indicator prevention, and intra-hospital transportation (“ticket to ride”). Deliver patient nourishments, fill water pitchers, distribute mail, and offer diversional activities to reduce or prevent restraint use. Report changes in patient status and provide feedback to the RN. Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints according to protocol. Environment & Equipment Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment for patient care. Complete unit safety checks, clean department equipment, change bed linens, empty hampers, and keep hallways clear. Stock rooms and supply areas; acquire/distribute supplies and equipment; complete basic messenger functions. Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department. Teamwork & Professionalism Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the care team. Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in health professions. Contribute to unit activities such as answering call lights, phones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Establish respectful and professional interpersonal relationships, showing accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to patient care. Learning & Development Constructively receive feedback and seek direction when needed. Identify and communicate learning needs to leadership. Participate in self-review and request support with planning and prioritizing tasks as appropriate. Safety & Compliance Follow all safety policies, standard precautions, and bloodborne pathogen protocols. Document accurately in the medical record per established procedures. Complete clerical tasks as needed. Adhere strictly to all policies related to patient care and hospital information. Respond appropriately to emergent situations within the nursing assistant scope. Provide one-on-one patient companionship/supervision as required. Access to medications is limited solely to delivering them to the nurse.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of patient care experience required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Successful completion of a UPMC nursing assistant training program
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and safe patient transfer techniques
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR (AHA-approved; must include both didactic and skills demonstration components, completed within 30 days of hire)
  • Act 31 Mandated Reporter Training (within 90 days of hire or transfer; renewal required)
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance (with renewal)
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Check (with renewal)
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance (with renewal)

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification preferred
