About The Position

The Patient Care Technician performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or LPN. This includes tasks such as cleaning patient rooms, operating clinical equipment, assisting in emergencies and patient procedures, and collecting/transporting specimens. The role involves communicating with patients, families, and the care team, maintaining competencies, and promoting a supportive and healing environment. Responsibilities also cover ensuring patient hygiene, comfort, and rest, complying with infection control and safety standards, and assisting with various medical devices and patient transfers. The technician observes and reports patient information, transports patients and specimens, assists with admissions, transfers, discharges, and postmortem care. They utilize technology, participate in performance improvement programs, serve as a resource, may engage in research, and help orient new nursing support assistants.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • BLS required.
  • Three (3) years of direct patient care experience and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through State of Georgia OR Completion of EMT-basic certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or LPN.
  • Cleans the patient's room.
  • Operates various clinical equipment.
  • Helps with emergencies.
  • Assists with patient procedures.
  • Collects and transports patient specimens and completes applicable forms.
  • Communicates with patients, families and members of the patient care team.
  • Maintains hospital and unit-specific competencies.
  • Promotes a supportive and healing environment so that customer and staff satisfaction are enhanced.
  • Assists in emergency situations as directed by an RN/LPN.
  • Ensures that prescribed measures related to hygiene, comfort, and rest are provided.
  • Complies with Standard Precautions guidelines, Infection Control procedures, and safety standards to maintain and promote a clean and healthy work environment.
  • Assists in the use of bag-valve-mask device, anti-embolism stockings, pneumatic compression stockings, oxygen, suction equipment, incentive spirometer, emergency cart and bedside glucose monitoring machine.
  • Operates converter chair, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, non-invasive BP monitors, automatic thermometer, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, and computers.
  • Records patient intake and output.
  • Assists RN/LPN in providing patient care according to individual needs by assisting with range of motion, ambulation, patient transfers, diet, elimination and hygiene.
  • Observes and reports significant or unusual information about the patient and environment to the RN/LPN and documents appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Transports patients and patient specimens throughout the hospital as needed.
  • Contributes to the completion of patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Assists with postmortem care.
  • Utilizes appropriate technology to complete all related processes.
  • Participates in unit-based and system-wide Performance Improvement program as required by department leadership.
  • Serves as a resource/model through compliance with standards of care and with Department of Nursing and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • May participate in research projects impacting patient care areas.
  • Participates in the orientation of nursing support assistants to the unit.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as required.
