About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) as a non-licensed team member. The PCT provides direct patient care to designated adult surgical step-down patients and supports the overall patient care team. This role involves assisting with activities of daily living, mobility, safety monitoring, and maintaining a clean, safe environment to promote optimal recovery and comfort.

Requirements

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate care and developmental considerations for adult patients.
  • Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain focus amid frequent interruptions and variable noise levels.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of patient care procedures, equipment, and software related to non-licensed roles (e.g., PCA/PCR/PCI procedures).
  • Understanding of infection prevention principles and aseptic techniques.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and repetitive movements safely.
  • Basic math skills and reading comprehension required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, feeding, and toileting.
  • Support patient mobility, transfers, and ambulation to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Provide continuous observation, including suicide prevention and safety assessments.
  • Maintain the patient’s environment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to meet patient needs efficiently and effectively.
  • Follow established procedures, standards, and protocols related to patient care activities.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, families, and team members to promote understanding and care quality.
  • Exercise judgment and initiative in problem-solving and prioritizing tasks.
  • Adhere to infection control principles, including proper hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including repetitive movements and patient handling, safely.
  • Read and understand basic math for medication and supply management as needed.
  • Organize tasks efficiently and attend to details to ensure timely completion of care activities.
