The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner. This role involves providing safe and direct care to patients in their assigned unit, making age-appropriate adjustments as needed, and monitoring patients' conditions while providing updates to the healthcare team. The technician delivers direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet their comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs, in accordance with VCUHS Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure. Responsibilities also include ensuring the assigned clinical location is maintained as a safe, clean, and stocked environment, managing supplies, educational material, equipment, and sterilization to promote quality patient care outcomes. The technician contributes to the patient experience by accurately identifying patients, observing safety goals, and reporting physical and mental responses to the plan of care or any incidents to licensed practitioners or Registered Nurses. This position requires obtaining and recording initial and ongoing patient information, assisting in specimen collection, attending mandatory trainings, and ensuring patient safety through participation in hospital initiatives. Establishing and maintaining courteous and effective rapport with patients, visitors, and co-workers, demonstrating sensitivity to their needs, and responding promptly to instructions are also key aspects of the role. The Patient Care Technician will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
