About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) in the TBI Unit is responsible for providing direct patient care under the supervision of professional nursing staff. This role involves assisting patients with daily living activities, monitoring vital signs, performing blood draws, and collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure optimal patient care and safety. The PCT plays a crucial role in maintaining a supportive and safe environment for patients, particularly during night shifts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Maryland state certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) required.
  • One (1) year of previous experience preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate using verbal and written skills.
  • Ability to organize work priorities and perform several duties simultaneously.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques and proper patient care procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Performs testing and manages the care of the patient based on results achieved and clinical findings.
  • Records patient care along the continuum, including activities of daily living (ADLs): feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting and transferring.
  • Completes, documents and reports patient vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation and reported pain level).
  • Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
  • Participates in cost effective strategies to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Promotes patient safety including fall prevention and ensures the safety of the clinical environment.
  • Maintains order and appearance of patient rooms and work area, including patient care supplies and linen.
  • Provides post-mortem care.
  • Collaborates with members of the health care team to carry out the plan of care, including reporting observed changes in patients' condition.
  • Measures and documents patient urinary and stool output, calorie count, and weight.
  • Assists with indwelling urinary catheter care and performs bladder scans.
  • Conducts blood glucose monitoring and performs venipuncture for blood samples.
  • Sets up and operates multiple lead EKG machines and assists with enteral tube feedings.
  • Performs chest physical/physio therapy, tracheal suctioning, and incentive spirometry treatments as delegated.
  • Assists with simple dressing changes and provides wound care.
  • Assists with collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Provides orthopedic/rehab device care and precepts PCT I and II staff.
  • Participates in hourly patient rounding and responds to patient triggered alarms.
  • Complies with The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and detects safety risks.
  • Incorporates safe lifting techniques and body mechanics in daily practice.
