About The Position

The Patient Care Technician Senior in the Cardio Thoracic Interventional Unit at UPMC Harrisburg is responsible for providing direct patient care as directed by the RN. This includes assisting with activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients. The technician maintains a safe and conducive environment for patient recovery, performs essential nursing core responsibilities, and communicates effectively with the healthcare team. The role also involves documenting patient care activities, complying with safety policies, and providing companionship to patients as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title, OR
  • 1 year of experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
  • 1 year of experience and completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of patient care technician senior class.
  • Successful completion of eRecord training.
  • Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care as directed by the RN including all activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients.
  • Maintains an environment conducive to patient safety and recovery including completing safety checks and keeping the department and patient rooms clean and organized.
  • Acquires and distributes supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care delivery.
  • Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail.
  • Performs nursing core responsibilities for nursing assistants: blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care.
  • Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Constructively receives feedback and direction, identifies learning needs, and participates in self-review.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Responds to emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role.
