About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) functions as a vital member of the hemodialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This role involves the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, patient education, and ensuring a clean and safe working environment. The PCT actively participates in quality enhancement programs and process improvement activities to support patient satisfaction and care outcomes.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements.
  • At least two years of previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
  • Successful completion of the FMCNA dialysis training program and CPR certification is required for continued employment.

  • Experience in a healthcare setting, particularly in dialysis or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Welcome assigned patients and assess their well-being since the last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and obtain necessary pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Perform vascular access evaluation and cannulation, and administer Heparin as delegated.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders and monitor patients' responses during therapy.
  • Document vital signs and treatment parameters accurately on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Report significant changes in patient condition to the appropriate healthcare team member.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment and areas between treatments.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and document participation.
  • Prepare and organize supplies and equipment for dialysis treatment.
