About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) functions as a vital member of the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy to patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This role involves the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, monitoring patient conditions, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and regulations. The PCT is also responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working environment and actively participating in quality enhancement and continuous improvement activities to support patient satisfaction and care outcomes.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements.
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
  • Successful completion of the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist healthcare team in providing patient education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Welcome and evaluate assigned patients, monitoring their wellbeing since the last treatment.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law.
  • Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, and evaluate vascular access before treatment.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders and monitor patients' responses during therapy.
  • Document treatment parameters and vital signs accurately on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Report significant changes in patient conditions to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Conduct machine safety checks and ensure all safety alarms are enabled during treatment.
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Participate in infection control audits and support adherence to infection control practices.
