About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) at Baystate Health is responsible for performing a variety of technical tasks and bedside functions under the coordination of a Registered Nurse (RN). The PCT will provide direct patient care, including hygiene, skin care, mobility assistance, and monitoring of patients. The role requires multi-skills to perform duties related to phlebotomy and EKGs, manage equipment, and assist in all procedures on the unit. The incumbent is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Proficient in reading and writing in English.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure in medium to high-stress situations.
  • Effective communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • PCT training or CNA training preferred.
  • At least one year of patient care experience for Level II.
  • Three or more years of patient care experience for Level III.
  • Four or more years of acute or specialty-specific care setting experience for Level IV.
  • C.N.A. preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides age-appropriate care to patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages for various age groups and applies developmental theories and concepts when implementing care.
  • Monitors basic physiological parameters and takes routine vital signs.
  • Records and reports any significant deviations in vital signs and changes in the patient's normal drainage pattern.
  • Administers treatments and procedures per BMC policy/procedure.
  • Changes dressings within specified timeframes and provides post-mortem care as directed by RN.
  • Assists physicians with exams and simple procedures, ensuring patient identity is verified.
  • Assists patients with elimination of body wastes and accurately labels and sends specimens.
  • Performs Point of Care (POC) Testing and assists in the delivery of ancillary services.
  • Communicates effectively with team and patients, recognizing culturally based needs.
  • Initiates emergency procedures and maintains patient safety.
  • Functions as a member of the team, assisting with clinical and non-clinical activities.
