About The Position

The Patient Care Tech (PCT) role at Northwestern Medicine is designed to support nursing staff by performing basic patient care activities under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). This position is integral to ensuring patient comfort and safety, while adhering to the organization's mission, vision, and values. The PCT will primarily work night shifts and may also float to other areas of the hospital as needed.

Requirements

• Nursing students who have completed one clinical rotation.
• Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or nursing school students with one semester of clinical completed.
• CPR - Basic Life Support certification.
• Physical demands include lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds and push/pull force up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

• Phlebotomy experience.
• Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or Graduate of Phlebotomy course.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
• Assists patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
• Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
• Assists with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly.
• Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking abilities.
• Utilizes critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work quickly as needs change.
• Serves as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
• Answers telephone, intercom, and call lights politely and communicates information to appropriate staff/family/patient.
• Manages overall unit workflow in concert with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed.
• Performs pre-census and validates daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed.
