About The Position

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join our NICU unit! This position is full-time, rotating shift hours. Weekend and holiday coverage required. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet one of the following:
  • 1 year of general healthcare experience.
  • 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion.
  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA or related healthcare program with at least one clinical rotation completed.
  • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class.
  • Successful completion of eRecord training.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal within 90 days of hire or transfer
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Nice To Haves

  • EMT or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in EMT/Paramedic program preferred.
  • ACLS preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs: bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, repositioning).
  • Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Report patient status changes and provide feedback to RN.
  • Perform core nursing assistant tasks: blood glucose checks, weights, vital signs, intake/output, specimen collection, Foley care.
  • Complete at least four advanced tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV removal.
  • Apply, monitor, and remove restraints per protocol.
  • Provide patient/family instruction under RN direction.
  • Ensure equipment malfunctions are reported promptly.
  • Respond to call lights, phones, pass meal trays, and transport patients.
  • Document care accurately in medical records.
  • Maintain effective communication and professional relationships.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness of workplace safety.
  • Participate in self-review, seek feedback, and identify learning needs.
  • Support departmental projects, quality initiatives, and suggest improvements.
  • Comply with all hospital policies, safety standards, and infection control.
  • Maintain enthusiasm, accountability, and commitment to patient care.
  • Perform clerical tasks as needed.
  • Achieve competency in advanced skills as required: phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKG, NG tube clamping/removal.
