About The Position

The Patient Care Technician I at UMass Memorial Health performs a variety of patient care activities under the direction of a licensed clinician. This role is essential in providing exceptional patient care, contributing to a safe environment, and assisting the healthcare team in meeting the personal needs and comfort of patients. The position requires working night shifts from 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with every other holiday and weekend scheduled. A signing bonus may be available, and the role emphasizes the importance of every employee as a caregiver in the health system.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school education or GED.
  • Basic Life Support certification within 30 days as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Basic Medical Terminology knowledge.
  • Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior inpatient/outpatient care experience or clinical care training.
  • Demonstrated competency attainment in the Patient Care Technician I level.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to gather information and build relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients.
  • Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment.
  • Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulating, meals, and nourishment.
  • Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques.
  • Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks and utilizing fall prevention strategies.
  • Takes and records vital signs and measures patients' weights and heights.
  • Performs EKGs, Point of Care tests, and bladder scanning.
  • Collects, labels, and prepares specimens for transport to the lab.
  • Assists RN/Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures.
  • Observes, measures, and records oral food and fluid intake.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients' needs.
  • Provides respectful, culturally and age-appropriate communication.
  • Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Keeps current with hospital and unit changes.
